⚠️ Community Notice – Protection of Swans ⚠️ |
||
|
Good afternoon,
Over the weekend, we received several concerning reports of swans being deliberately targeted by youths using air weapons in the local area. This behaviour is not only cruel but also a serious criminal offence. Very sadly, on Police attendance, one of the swans was found dead, having been shot.
Such acts cause immense suffering to the Swans, which are protected wildlife in law. Anyone found harming or attempting to harm them can face significant legal consequences, including fines and prosecution.
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to intentionally kill, injure, or take any wild bird. Swans are fully protected under this legislation.
Additionally the Firearms Act 1968 makes it an offence to misuse air weapons, especially in a reckless or dangerous manner, can which can lead to serious criminal charges.
We ask all residents to stay vigilant. If you witness suspicious behaviour or anyone using air weapons irresponsibly, please report it to the police immediately. If it is happening at the time, call 999; otherwise, report via 101 or the Lancashire Police website. The Local Neighbourhood Policing Team along with Rural Task Force Officers will be conducting additional patrols in the area in response to these incidents.
Let’s work together to protect our local wildlife and ensure our community remains a safe and respectful place for everyone.
Thank you.
